Devil's Cauldron (Multi Man Publishing)

This is a monster game that is going to take several months to complete, so I am going to post my observations and insights as the German commander around Nijmegen.

When I first looked at the map I knew things were going to be rough. We were putting the band on the front line after all, something that was not common in World War II.

September 17, 1944
As the American 82nd Airborne Division started to land there was very little that I could do. Most of my units on the board were static flak units that could not move to engage the enemy, or even get clear shots as the paratroopers rushed down the roads towards the bridges over the Grave and Waal rivers. What troops I did have were of low quality, so I put them on the roads around Nijmegen and dug in, hoping to delay the Americans as much as possible until nightfall when I could try to rush reinforcements into the city.

This tactic was successful as no American troops even reached the outskirts of Nijmegen.

Sepetember 18, 1944
It was a good morning for the Germans. Poor weather kept the Americans from receiving reinforcements and resupply. On the other hand, the roads into Nijmegen were open, allowing me to flood the city with reinforcements and dig in.

The lack of American reinforcements also allowed me to overrun the 82nd's drop zones and landing zones, threatening their supply and reinforcements for the rest of the game unless orders can be changed.

American forces reached the outskirts of the city, but were slowed by my entrenched units around the Nijmegen bridges.

Unfortunately, the Americans were able to secure a bridge of the Grave River, as I failed a die roll to blow the bridge. This gives them the start of a Club Route and will be trouble as more allied forces arrive.
