| This is an After Action Report for a Command Decision 4 game recreating a portion of Operation EPSOM where the British fought elements of the German Panzer Lehr Division for control of Fontenay (Normandy, France) on June 26, 1944. | The British assault on eastern Fontenay pushes forward. |
The British attackers from the West capture the German commander. This cannot be a good sign. A search for white cloth is initiated by the high command.
The western British force is now to the Southeast of the British force attacking from the Northeast. This means that the Germans are completely surrounded as they defend eastern Fontenay.
Eastern Fontenay falls to the British on Turn 8.
The Germans have lost the town, but hopefully the remaining armor can retreat to fight another day.
This was a fun scenario to play. It may seem one sided in that the Germans were soundly defeated by the British, but there were some exciting moments where the Germans could have held just a little bit longer. The British had overwhelming artillery support while the Germans kept having their commanders killed, which made it impossible to call in German artillery. The Germans advanced too far to the East which brought them into conflict sooner than they wanted to. If the Germans had held back until reinforcement arrived they could have offered stiffer resistance to the British assault. In the West, the Germans did not contribute many resources. When the initial ambush position failed, there was little choice but to withdraw in the face of British armor. A deep defense, rather than an ambush, would have slowed the British down more and given the Germans to the East more time to organize. The British commanders did a good job of out maneuvering the Germans and concentrating their firepower. A well deserved victory for the Brits. Jolly good.
