This is an After Action Report for a Battleground scenario called "Stuck In the Mud" played at the club on September 10, 2005. Two German Panthers have become trapped in the mud and must be recovered and moved off the board before the Russians can destroy them. All images are thumbnails which can be clicked on for a bigger picture.
Two German Panthers are stuck in the mud. They need to be towed out of the mud and escorted to safety for the Germans to win this scenario.
The Germans have some infantry support and a strong position in some woods to the East of the game board.
Two groups of Russians are advancing from the South. Armor to the East and infantry to the West.
The Germans move to cover the Panthers as the Russians advance from the South.
In the opening salvo, the Russians get an extremely lucky shot and smoke one of the Panthers! The Germans strike back though, especially with some key shots from the troops hidden in the Eastern woods.
The Germans pop smoke and continue rescue operations for the one remaining Panther as the Russians advance with heavy casualties.
The Russian advance continues as the German Panther is freed from the mud and moves in reverse towards the Northern map edge.
The lead Russian T-34's are forced to retreat. As they turn back, the German Panther reaches the Northern end of the board . . . giving victory to the Germans.
The Russian infantry is intact, but was not able to close with the German Panthers fast enough to make a difference.
This short scenario played quickly and would be a good introduction to the Battleground rule set for new players. The Russian player got a lucky shot that took out one of the Panthers early on. The Russians should have tried to change the orders of their armor to the East of the board so that it avoided the German ambush in the woods, or given the armor more infantry support. The Germans used their infantry support by popping smoke that bought time until the remaining Panther could be pulled from the mud.
