Turn #5 At the start of this turn, the Austrians are moving forward across the entire battlefield. The Prussians finally decide to commit their cavalry, but as the Austrians have secured their flanks using their superior numbers, the Prussians must risk a frontal assault hoping that the large Austrian battalions will break.
The forces from Wurttenberg hold a formidable position on the Austrian right, with their flank anchored on the river.
The Austrians push on their left.
Austrian Left: A Prussian cuirassier squadron charges on the extreme left. They take 50% casualties from point-blank fire, then fail a morale check.
Austrian Center: A Prussian dragoon squadron rolls two sixes in a row to charge the Austrian heavy artillery battery. It closes, even though it takes 25% casualties while crossing the field.
Austrian Center: A Prussian dragoon squadron is repulsed as it attacks the Austrians just across the river.
Austrian Center: Meanwhile, the Austrian infantry continues to press forward. The Prussian grenadiers in the center are reduced to 25% effectiveness from a withering cross-fire. The Prussians have no choice but to fall back in the face of overwhelming numbers.
At the end of the turn, the Prussian center is in real danger, and the Prussian wings are effectively pinned by the advancing Austrians.
Turn #6
Austrian Left: The Austrians have completely cleared the Prussians from this wing as the Prussians move their remaining troops to support the center. This means trouble in the long run as the Austrians have successfully flanked the Prussian right.
Austrian Center: The Prussians charge the heavy battery yet again. Despite a horrible die roll by the Austrians, the Prussians do not pass morale and cannot close. (If this was Warhammer the battery would be toast!)
Austrian Center: The Prussians are nearly surrounded. Enfilade fire is taking its toll, but the Prussian infantry is stubborn and holds.
Austrian Right: The Wurttenberg forces advance to keep in line with the Austrian center.
At the end of the turn, the Prussians are being pushed back.
Turn #7
Austrian Left: The Prussians are gone. The Austrians move into column to attempt to get behind the Prussian lines in the center.
Austrian Center: The Austrians continue to use their numerical superiority to flank the Prussians and trap them in a U-shaped line.
At the end of the turn, the Prussians are just one casualty away from taking a break test. The Austrians are clearly flanking on the left and the Prussian center is giving way.
Austrian Right: The Prussians prepare to receive an assault even as the center looks to be in serious trouble.
Turn #8: The Final Turn
Austrian Left: The remnants of the Prussians are caught by some devastating enfilade fire. You can see Austrian march columns speeding towards the Prussian rear.
Austrian Center: The Prussians are outnumbered and surrounded on three sides by the Austrians who have curved their main line into a "U" around the Prussian center.
Austrian Right: The Prussians and the forces from Wurttenberg meet. This is the strongest part of the Prussian line at this point, but with the other parts of the field in trouble, that is little consolation for the Prussian commanders this late in the battle.
The Aftermath
The Prussians must make a withdrawal check after taking 30% casualties. The battle is declared an Austrian victory. The Austrians have carried the left and center. This is a historical result, and the Austrians have two weeks to celebrate before they are handed a defeat from Frederick the Great at Leuthen. The Prussian commanders agree that they were too aggressive in opposing the river crossing. They should have consolidated their forces instead of moving forward. The Austrians were able to use their superior numbers to divide the Prussians and surround them. This battlefield is deceptive! The Prussians seem to be in a stronger position than they really are! A well fought battle with a historical result.
